    potatoes, oats and turnips, and also fowl and eggs were often exchanged for goods in former times and even today eggs are often bartered for goods.
    The young boys and girls often went spreading turf or digging potatoes for some shopkeepers in order to pay for their goods. Goods given on credit were spoken of as given on tick.
