  1. Long ago Shrove Tuesday was a time when most marriages took place.
    Whit Saturday, Whit Sunday, and Whit Monday, are looked upon as unlucky for marriages to take place, and also Friday is supposed to be unlucky .
    Long ago wealthy people who had a lot of daughters used to entertain wealthy men who had farms or a bit of property, and very often some of the men married some of thew daughters.
    Long ago when a feast was taking place, the people who were not {unfit?} invited used to mask themselves and go in.
    They were called the "Strawboys" and they all demanded a dance with the bride. They were always welcome.
