giving light at night in former times was not very convenient. Sometimes they used bogdeal splinters, sometimes common candles and sometimes rushlights.
The rushlights were peeled rushed twisted together and dipped in sheeps tallow. These were also called dips. Nowadays none of these kinds of light are used as the people have got oil lamps which show much better light than those candles.
