  1. In this district marriages take place in the early part of the year generally before Ash Wednesday but sometimes people get dispensations and get married in Lent. It was an old custom on the first Saturday of Lent (market day in Kilkelly) to throw salt on all young people who were not married. May is supposed to be the unluckiest month of the year for marriages.
    "Married in May
    You will rue the day", is an old saying.
    June marriages are supposed to be very happy.
    Wednesday is said to be the luckiest day of the week for marriages and it is on this day most marriages take place here. There is an old rhyme which says : -
    Monday for health,
    Tuesday for wealth,
    Wednesday the best day of all,
    Thursday for losses,
    Friday for crosses,
    Saturday no luck at all.
    The bride as a rule wears blue on her wedding day. This is what the old people say
