has a lease of the fair ground from the Land Commission.
The custom varies, such as follows, for calves you pay 4 d, for bullocks and heifers 6 d, and for cows 8 d, for bonhams 2 d, for pigs 4 d, and for horses 8 d.
When the seller gets paid outside the local bank or hotel he gives luck money to the buyer as follows calves 6d to 1/= , bullocks and heifers 1/= to 1/6, horses 5/= to 10/=, bonhams 6d to 1/=, and pigs 1/= to 2/=. If there is a halter on a horse or bull that is given to the buyer also.
I heard this from my father. He lives in Knockbrack, in the parish of Annagh, Ballyhaunis.
