Index of international folktales

This searchable index of tales is based primarily on the catalogue of international tales, The Types of the Folktale (1961) by Anti Aarne and Stith Thompson. It is supplemented in many instances with additional tale types and tale summaries drawn from The Types of the Irish Folktale (1967) by Seán Ó Súilleabháin and Reidar Th. Christiansen, an equivalent national folktale catalogue that closely follows the numbering system of the parent catalogue.

Ó Súilleabháin and Christiansen’s catalogue includes a number of uniquely Irish tale types, and where Irish analogues of international folktales differ significantly, these variations are summarised by the authors. Precedence is given to Irish variants throughout this index.

Although Aarne-Thompson’s catalogue has been updated in Hans-Jörg Uther’s The Types of International Folktales (2004), for the purposes of this index it was decided to refer only to the work of Aarne-Thompson and Ó Súilleabháin-Christiansen, as only these two catalogues were available to Irish Folklore Commission staff when they catalogued the tales in the 1950s and 1960s. Only folktales from the Schools’ Collection are included at present.

We would like to express our sincerest thanks to Professor Hasan El-Shamy, author of Types of the Folktale in the Arab World (2004), who generously provided us with a digitised copy of the Aarne-Thompson catalogue with which to create this index.
