It is a custom:-
Not to throw out anything on New Year's Day. If you do you'll be throwing out things for the year. For no woman to visit anothers house on New Year's Day.
On Good Friday to drink your tea without milk or sugar.
On May Eve to place a branch of mountain ash or quickbeam in the garden to keep out the fairies.
To sprinkle Holy Water on the cows on May Eve to keep the butter.
A bonfire is lighted on St. John's Night, the 24th June.
A goose or cock is killed on St Martins Day and to sprinkle the blood on the four corners of the house. To gather a portion of the blood on a piece of tow and to put it on the rafter. This was supposed to keep away all illness.
