- Long ago people used to make sowens. When people brought oats to the mill to be made into meal they always got back from the mill some seeds or hulls as well as the oat meal. They would steep the seeds for one night and in the morning they would drain the water off. This was then white and a bit like milk. They would then boil it for an hour. When this was boiled it became solid like porridge or cornflour. This was supped the same as porridge.
