  1. A Local Song

One Sunday in the afternoon I heard a mother's cries

One Sunday in the afternoon I heard a mother's cries
While bitter tears were falling fast in torrents from her eyes.
She shrieked aloud in asking why I thought her heart would break.
Lamenting for her darling child who was drowned in Cuilca Lake.
Laurence Butler was his name a lad both tall and young
His tender parents loved him well and bade him do no wrong.
Till on that fatal afternoon his home he did forsake
And he went to roam for pleasure on the shores of Cuilca Lake.
He was but fifteen years of age just in the bloom of youth.
A member of St. Peter's Church, that holy ground of truth.
God help his friends and parents with grief their hearts will break.
Since they heard of the sad announcement of his death at Cuilca Lake.
