    Hedge Schools.
    In olden times there were no schools like what we have now. There were only hedge schools. Those schools were built of yellow clay and plastered over with white-wash. There was a hedge school in Old Leighlin and it was built on the field near the pump. The name of it then was Pender's field. The names of the teachers were
    Miss Foran and Miss Pender. They lived in a house built on the field and a part of this house was the place where they used to teach.
    They were not strangers, but natives of the village, and some of their descendants are still living in Old Leighlin. They used to receive no money from the government. Only two pence a week from each child.
    Those two teachers knew no Irish, but if they knew it, the would not be allowed to teach it to the children. They were only allowed to teach them how to read and write, and
