1. The Story of the Hedge-Schoolmaster (ar lean)

   as many do now, await the leaving off age to work with farmers and spend their lives after without leaving their locality. But now something had happened. One of the boys who was pretty good at school had got a job in Co Kildare with a 'horsey' family and consequently was regarded locally as one going to foreign places, 'a great lad' and 'an explorer'. On receipt of the news the Master he thought himself he would make some capital out of it. The boy being a pupil of his, and attaining his present proud position as a result of his injunctions. When the scholars had assembled he banged the table loudly for silence and exclaimed "Now children, in future I want you to work hard at your books and lessons, and tell your parents I said they were to see you do this each evening. Look at the great value of learning! Only this morning Tommy Murphy, one of our best pupils is gone to be a stable boy".

   This is another of Mr Maher's stories about the same Master. A rather rich man named Walsh had recently come from England to the district with intentions of buying a farm and settling down. He had made his money in England
