Another story re the swallow is that if her tongue were split by a sixpence the bird would talk as does the parrot.
The magpie is regarded as a bird of evil omen but when seen in pairs, it is a lucky sign. Magpies frequent Cloneygoose, Ballyphenan & Kilcoltrim. The Skylark has her nest in the tangled grass of a meadow & lays about five eggs in it.
The robin makes her home in a hedge. We all love the robin and are proud when she enters the house as she is supposed to bring good luck.
The robin got its redbreast when pulling a cruel thorn from our Saviour's Head: then a drop of the precious Blood fell on the bird's breast and ever since she is called "Robin Red Breast".
