Old Crafts
Pottery work used to be carried on in Carrickduff. There is no trace of it there now.
Newtownbarry Lace used to be prized. Mrs Booth, sister of Mr. Hall-Dare, who is the landlord of the greater part of the town + district, has some pieces of this lace. Some of the oldest women of the town used to make it.
Mrs Booth remembers it being made. She lives at Weston, Newtownbarry.The river Slaney which flows past the town has always been noted for salmon + trout fishing. Sportsmen are attracted here every Spring + are a great benefit to the town.Some pearls from the pearl fish have been picked up near the river bank.
Otter-hunting used to be engaged in but it seems to have died out now.
Grouse, snipe, pheasants + partridges shooting takes place in the season.
