Old Schools
This school at present is called "St Mary's National School, Newtownbarry" but it is known locally as "Ryland School" because it is in the townland of Ryland.
It was first opened as a National School on 31st January 1898.
The Principal Teachers of this school since it was opened as a National School are -
William Neely from 31-1-1898
to 1-4-'12
David Hill McCombe from 1-7-1912 to 25-9-1919
(Mrs) Margaret Levingston from
25-9-1919 to present date.This was originally an Erasmus Smith School and consisted of a Boys' department downstairs and a Girls' School upstairs, with a master + mistress in charge.
One of the teachers who taught here in those days is the present Bishop of Clogher - Dr.Mc Mannaway.
The building must be over 100 yrs of age. Its walls consist of bad stones joined with very poor mortar. The windows which face north are very low but very wide + still have the small diamond shaped panes of glass. The entrance door - both(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
