When skins came in from butchers they were covered with hair which had to be removed. This was done by steeping them in lime pool and then removing hair by means of two handled knives. For the work a number of labourers had to be employed.
Hides next washed and put into vats with layers of oak bark between them. They had to be "handled" and drained each day at first and them monthly. The whole tanning process was completed in from 9--12 months according to the quality of leather required.
For sole leather it took 1 year.
Lighter leather for uppers 9 months.

The length of time a man had to serve to the "Curriers Trade" was 7 years.
Three types of knives were used for this finishing off of the leather
