    decided to let every county defend itself so they refused to go.
    Captain Hay's men knew he was friendly with the insurgents and one of them informed on him.
    On the 27th. July 1798 he had to stand his trial by courtmartial for appearing in arms and being in rebellion against His Majesty.
    The informer was hanged for his treachery as the authorities did not trust him.
    Captain Hay's brother Edward , The Hon. Sec. to the Irish Catholic Committee, was tried for treason and acquitted and twelve months afterwards was re-arrested and subsequently released.
    Colonel John Hay of the French Army was arrested after the successful engagement at Tubberneering and shortly after his arrest was executed and his body cast into the River Slaney.
