  1. About fifty years ago there were many "shebeens" i.e. public houses around here - there were three or four at Moyne Cross and another in Barney Duffy's convenient to the present National School. A man named Phil Newman, a blacksmith had a forge in Moyne. He was very fond of drink and when anybody wanted him to do a job he was always to be found in the "shebeen".
    The Parish priest of Dromard at that time was Canon Duffy, and it grieved him to see the way the blacksmith was spending his earnings.
    He approached the blacksmith on several occasions to take the pledge but without success. At last he succeeded. The pledge he took was
    "Not to drink any except in
