“Wrestling was a very common game in this district long ago.”
Wrestling was a very common game in this district long ago. Wrestling matches were held after hurling and football matches and there were challenge wrestling matches held also. The combatants held each other by the left hand gripping the collar of the opponents coat and the right hand gripping him under the left arm. This was the only recognised hold. An elder brother of mine Peter Duignan was the champion wrestler of this district. He was a Latin boy attending the Seminary in Moyne and his mother was against going to those wrestling matches. One day a group of men from Lettergeera met him at mass and brought him to corn Hill to wrestle against a man from the other side of the hill. He won the match but the meeting ended in a general fight which continued all the way down the hill. A woman named Ginty from Drumman fought with the Ballinamuck men. She had a stone in her stocking(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
