- The castle of the Bawn was a fortification of the Danes the time they held this country. There was a pond around the castle and some of it is there yet, the water was supplied to it by a well in Bawn garden and the Danes had a drawbridge across this pond and they would put down the drawbridge any time they wanted to get in or out. That was about the 10th century and after that they were defeated by Brian Boroimhe and banished out of Ireland.
And in some time after that it was turned into a Convent and St Lupita taught school in it.
When Cromwell came and planted the landlords in Ireland he planted one in Bawn named Uozely and built a big house for him beside the castle.
After lifting the rent he buried it at the back gate in a churn for safety from the robers because the were no banks at that time and it is believed that the churn of gold is at the back gate yet but no one living can tell where the back gate was at that time.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
