  1. About three years ago a little boy named Patrick McCullen was drowned in a pond over near Clonmellon about half a mile from Kilskyre in a place called Miltown. It was in the winter time of the year and the pond was coated with ice. This evening when the boy and his brother and companions were coming home from school they went in to slide on this ice. They were sliding on the ice for a while and at last it broke and one of the boys went down through it and the other brother ran in to save him but the boy that ran in was drowned.
The boy that was with them ran for a man named Michael Tighe and he just was in time to save one of them. The pond is dry now. The man got a very good reward and also the boy who went for him.
The first thing the boy said was, "Is Patrick safe". He was buried in Oldcastle with a very large funeral.
