- Years ago my great-grand-uncle who died fifty years ago made tallow candles and we have at present the grisset.
This is how they made them - the maid would be sent to gather the rushes them they would peel them and tie them in bundles to dry. When they would be quite dry what was known as the grisset would be filled with melted grease, such as mutton fat, and each rush would be dipped in the grease and again tied in bundles to dry; the longer they were left to dry the better the light. Our ancestors also did spinning and weaving. They made their table linen and bed linen some of which we have at present.- Bailitheoir
