- The Church avenue is the name given locally to the lane from the public road to the old church and burial ground of Kilcarne.
The story goes that some solder was killed and buried there. It was supposed to be unlucky not to throw a stone on this grave when passing with a funeral.
The stones thus thrown accumulated into a great heap and were only removed about 40 years ago to clear a road to the churchyard which till then was only a path.
There was enough of stones in the heap to make the road to the church gate.Opposite this church avenue was a lone bush which was looked upon with superstitious dread by the natives. It stood at a bend in (?) awkward position.
Two neighbouring men cut it down and it is a well known fact that ill luck followed them afterwards. Mrs Oakes told me this and asked me not to divulge the names of these men as their relatives are still living in the neighbourhood.- Bailitheoir
