Cromwell came to take the home of the Prestons, one of whom had commanded the Confederate forces in the recent rebellion. Here he had four lines of soldiers lined from the sea to the castle. When Cromwell approached the castle, Lord Gormanston came out and Cromwell asked him whose were those lands and castle. Lord Gormanston replied "This is Lord Gormanston's today, but it will be Cromwell's to-morrow."
Lord Gormanstown showed great hospitality to Cromwell and his men, and in return his lands were not confiscated.
As a compliment to Cromwell, Lord Gormanstown caused an oak tree to be planted for each soldier that lined the avenue. These trees are still to be seen on the main avenue.
