    Long ago if parents did not want their daughter to get married the daughter would run away with her intended husband and remain away until they got a dowry from their parents. This dowry usually consisted of a farm of land.
    In olden times when parents around this district wanted their daughters to marry they usually took them to the fairs which were held in Dundalk and gave them away in exchange for someone else's child. If they went against their parents wishes they would have to go and hide in another person's house.
    Most people in this district get married during shrove. The old people of this district used to call it "Shraft".
