- The local fairs are held in the local towns and have been for many years. Cattle and horse dealers used to trade at cross - roads but this is hardly ever done now.
Long ago fairs were held in the small villages. A public house and another little house where tea and bread etc could be obtained were erected. The town fair is held in a field for the purpose called the "cow -green"
Long ago 2d or 3d had to be paid on every horse before being taken away. This was called "toll - money". Men were employed to lift this money and it went to the upkeep of the town When pigs horses and cattle are sold there is always luck money given. This is called a "luck - penny". The luck penny may be from 1 sh to £2 according to the bargain made. When making the bargain they slap each others hands and sometimes spit on the "luck - penny"
When an animal is bought it is marked sometimes with dirt rubbed on its back and sometimes heel is used.
When a horse is sold the halter is always given with the horse. A special fair is held in(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
