- Potatoes are the staple food of Ireland. In 1848 when the blight came on the potato in Ireland, a famine came causing the population of Ireland to be reduced to four and a half millions. The potatoes are sown in Spring, and the farmers are very busy during that season.
Potatoes are grown on our farm and the amount of land under them is an Irish acre. My brothers prepare the ground, and we set the potatoes in drills. Manure from the farmyard or slag is used. Wooden plough were used about thirty five years ago, but there are none left.
