- Marriages of long ago.
Long ago people used to get married at Shrove. It was said that May was a very unlucky month to get married. It was also said that Monday and Friday were very unlucky days, They used to say that if people get married on Monday they would never have a day's luck, or if on a Friday they would never have any family. People used to get married in the evening. The Bridegroom used to go on horseback to the Chapel and the Bride used to go in a covered car with her people. They used to have a great party that night at the house of the Bride. Strawboys used to come to the wedding party. When they came in they used to dance and sing for the people of the house. They used to ask the Bride to dance with them. The people of the house always gave them liquor. They used to wear straw hats and old clothes like wrenboys. They came without being invited. The Bride wore a veil, a white frock, white shoes and stockings. The Bridegroom wore black clothes. They used to keep their wedding clothes for luck. The farmers at that time used to give land or cows to their sons and daughters as a dowry. The bridal pair(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
