  1. This pretty little seaside spot, in summer, does not look at all like the scene of a most terrible tragedy of the sea. About 7 o clock on the evening of 22nd December 1775, the inhabitants of the district were horrified to hear moans and shrieks coming from the shore. Being superstitious folk they drew down their window blinds, and in the morning the shrieks were explained in a most tragic manner.
The beach was strewn with wreckage and horribly mutilated bodies of soldiers. A transport from Portsmouth - the Marquis of Rockinghamshire - with three Companies of soldiers besides two women and children, had been driven on the rocks by the heavy gale of the previous night and dashed to pieces. All on board, with the exception of three officers and thirty privates, had perished in the quiet little bay. Even those who had been saved had their flesh torn by the rocks, and to add to their horrors, they were attacked by numbers of the inhabitants, who carried off every article which could be saved.
