- Shops were common in olden times. People had not to go to the nearest town to make purchases. Buying and selling was carried on after Mass and this is still practised. The sixpence is refered to as a "tanner", the shilling a "bob", the pound a "quid", and the three-penny bit a "kids eye". The eight-penny-bit are gone out of use.
