    Miss Barry, the present owner of Monanimy Castle nearby informs me that there are traces of an underground passage from the castle to the graveyard and site of monastery. This was probably a means of escape for the monks in case of danger. Incidentally, she also mentions that a passage underground also existed between Monanimy Castle and Carrigacunna Castle, although Carrigacunna Castle is about a mile down and at the opposite side of the river Blackwater.
    This graveyard of Monanimy is still in use and many corpses are interred there every year.
    Very few families like to leave the old burial place to get fresh graves owing to the strong belief that when one member of a family is interred in a fresh grave, two are bound to follow quickly.
