- Once proud Carraig Caisil
What a saddening sight.
To look upon your hoary walls
And gaze on you tonight
And see the ivy growing wild
Upon your shattered walls
And briar and nettle reign supreme
Within your kingly walls.
Your gates they are long broken now
Your stately halls in ruin
No more your walls shall echo
To the harp's melodious tune.
No more upon your grassy lawn
Shall King or chieftain meet
In feats of art and manly games
Thats rival to compete.
No more shall beautious Moylan
Nor Diarmuid of the sword
Shall gather at the midnight feast
Around thy festive board.
No more through Priory's valley
Shall McAuliffe's war-cry ring
Or Duhallow's clansmen gather
Round the standard of their King
Carraig Caiseal now in ruins was at one time a stronghold of the McAuliffes owners of this locality. Their chief castle was about one mile west of the town of Newmarket and another castle was near Priory only a short distance from Carraig Caiseal.I got this poem from Denis Sheahan, The Line, Meelin, Co Cork(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
