This used be the favourite day for weddings. It is still known as "pancake Tuesday" the custom being to make pancakes for the evening tea on this occasion.
Ash Wednesday:-
This was always regarded as one of the "black fast" days , in the olden times people old and young, abstained from the use of milk, eggs and butter on and subsequent days in Lent.
Whit:-
"Beware of fire and water round Whit". It was regarded unlucky for a child to be born on "Whit"(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
