Many people suffered great hardships and died of hunger rather forsake the faith of their forefathers. Those people who held fast to the true religion received shelter and consolation in the workhouses and "shacks" that were built near the town of Boyle. Cartloads of dead bodies were brought daily to the burial ground and interred. People, whose relatives died, came and claimed the carcasses and had them buried properly, and the full ceremony recited.
