The Famine Days in Ireland.
The famine which occurred in 1846-1847 effected this district very much. It is said that the famine was worse here than it was in any other part of Ireland except few places, where the land was rocky and barren.
Before the famine this district was very thickly populated, but the famine swept away family after family until at last every house was vacant. Those houses then fell, and many ruins of those old houses are yet pointed out by the old people.
The blight came upon the potatoes by the stalks getting black and withered. Then when the people went to dig the potatoes they found nothing but decayed potatoes.
The people lived on whatever little oat-meal they had, and they also had to walk very long distances to get it.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Faisnéiseoir
