The first Relief Scheme that was started in this district was at Kealy's Lane. It was made through a rock which can still be seen. The men who worked on the scheme, got only eightpence a day. Out of that they had to feed themselves and their families.
At the time of the famine a lot of the Irish went to America. Numbers of them died on the voyage. It was said that the Atlantic is paved with the bones of the Irish.
After the famine a plague called, "black fever" broke out. Thousands of people died of the fever. There were people found dead on the side of the road as well as in the houses.
