There are old ruins of schools in our district There was an old school in Drummond and some of the walls are there yet The school was on the side of the road and the master's house was on the other The school was a small one with two window and it was thatched There was one fireplace and it burned turf Each child had to bring the turf to the school Mater Reilly was the schoolmaster's name In the school were six planks and when the children began to write they had to kneel down and leave their slates on the plank There were some black boards hung in the school From those the master used to teach the lesson to the children No Irish was taught It was all English No paper was used at the time Slates and slatepencils were used instead The number on rolls was about twenty and the teacher had to go around to try to get the children
