- First the thatcher gets the straw and teases it well with his hands. The way he teases it is he gets a little sheaf and catches it by both ends and pulls it till he has it even. The he puts it in big bundles until he is going to thatch. The thatcher generally has a man to attend him. Then he sprinkles the straw with water and makes little bundles of it called sapogs. The thatcher needs a little fork called a thatching fork, to catch the sapogs on to push them under the other on top. Then wire was tied around the thatch to keep it down. Then it is trimed round. The thatcher rakes down the thatch and sprinkles it with water when he has it finished.
