Get out Heavy-sides, and have this man as safe in the morning as he is to night, or if not, I'll have you burned and sprinkled around the forest in dust. About 12 oclock, the battle took place between the eight footed dog and Heavy-sides, and every rush they made, almost drove in the sides of the little house. At cock-crow in the morning, Heavy-Sides came in torn to pieces. The old man then got breakfast for Prince John and the dog. He then said "There is a sister-dog to Heavy-Sides a hundred miles from this, and if you reach it before twelve oclock you will be saved. If you ever get over this return me my dog, and never tie him.
Prince John went along with the dog. The dog spoke to him and he said, "Can you ride," "Yes" he said.
He then got on Heavyside's back and reached the sister dog's house in due time. This dog was named Knowledge. "Welcome, Prince John from Ireland," said the second old man. "Bad place your legs brought you but if you went elsewhere it would be worse. Prince John, I know your trouble." He got a supper ready for them. He then said "Knowledge and Heavy-Sides get out and if you havent this man as safe in the morning as he is now, Ill have ye burned and sprinkled around the forest in dust. About 12'oclock the fight started, and was much fiercer than the first. In the morning the two dogs came in torn to pieces.
The next morning the old man prepared the breakfast for the Prince and the two dogs, and he said, "Well now, tis a pity I have a brother a thousand miles from this, and you'll never reach him before 12 oclock. If you ever get out of this return me my dog and never tie him. My brother has a sister to Knowledge named Swift, and the three dogs might save ye. On for the road, they went. Swift says to Heavysides "Is this man able to ride". "Yes" says Heavysides. Then get on my back, said she and in less than no time they were landed.
