    you might see them made of lime and sand mixed. Half doors are fairly common in my district, and they were also common in olden times. There are accounts of old houses having no glass in the windows and old straw mats were put in the place of the glass. Turf was ever used for the fire and also timber. Rush candles, Bog-oak, and home made candles were used for giving light, and bog-oak was used for fire also.
