- The kind of houses which existed in the district in former times were all thatched houses. There were very low slated houses long ago because there were no slates. They used to get the thatch as follows. People used to grow oats, then cut it, and after that they used to threash it, and after that the straw of it was put on the houses, and people do that yet. Yes nearly all of the old houses had a bed in the kitchen, and it was mostly at the side of the house near the fire because it was warm. The chimney was made mostly of clay and lime mixed, and sometimes it was made of mortar and stones, and sometimes of clay and wattles. In place of the chimney you would see a hole in the thatch and a creel on the top of it outside. The old floors were made of clay mostly in some houses you might(continues on next page)
