  1. Some twenty or twenty five years ago a man named Mr Cooke owned a very prosperous business premises in the town of Tubbercurry. It was situated in the centre of the town facing the Square. It was a very large shop and included, grocery, drapery, boots, shoes, and hardware trade. There were between twenty and twenty-five hands constantly employed. Like most young men in the country the assistants of this shop openly sympathised with the Irish movement for freedom which had its origin in Dublin in Easter Week nineteen hundred and sixteen.
On the 30th September 1920 this large premises was maliciously set on fire by crown forces of England, known as the Black and Tans, and burned to ashes. The whole building and stock on hands at the time were consumed in the conflagration. Luckily no lives were lost as the burning was anticipated and precautions had been taken.
