- My father did not sow any potatoes last year. About a quarter of an acre of land is taken up when potatoes are sown. Some years potatoes are sown on a half-acre and some years on a quarter acre. Some farmers sow the potatoes in drills and others sow them in ridges. The iron of the spades is made in foundries. All the lands long ago was worked by the spades but now it is nearly all machinery. There were wooden ploghs there long ago but there are not any of them there now only iron ploughs. The farmers always help sowing the potatoes. During the Summer months the farmer manures the crops with slag. Then he sprays the potatoes. He digs them with a potato digger or a plough. The big potatoes are called "craps" the small ones are called "cricans" and the black or rotten ones are called "waste." The Irish Queens, the Arran Barret, and the Kerrs Pink grow the largest in this district. The potatoes in older times were always used instead of starch.
