  1. People get married more frequently before lent. May is said to be a very unlucky month to get married in. Mondays and Thursday are lucky days for marriage. Matches are not made now but they were made very often long ago.
    Money is given as dowry and if it is scarce stock is given instead. A wedding feast is held in the bride's house and all sorts of entertainment is given. There are a few old customs connected with marriage. If a widower gets married his wife should not go in on the door the first wife came out on. If she does it is said that the two women will meet. Long ago the bride used to be brought to a friend's house for a week before she got married and that was called the runaway.
    Strawboys visit the house of the married couple and sometimes they get a bad reception and they fight. The wear big straw hats over their eyes and face and they turn their coats the wrong side. One of them is called a captain and he orders the others. They dance and sing and if anyone looks at them they hit them. When they are leaving
