“In the penal days people were not allowed to go to school . . .”
(ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)Those schools were called "hedge schools." There was one of those schools in Gortnamona mountains. It was an old thatched house and the walls were standing until a few years ago when they were taken to build cabins.
There was a hedge school in Sonnaugh a thatched one also. Afterwards it was made into a dwelling house and a man by the name of Mitchel is still living in it.
There was also a hedge school in Kilnadeema and sometimes there was more than twenty people at this school. The people learned every language at this school. There was always two or three people left on guard so that they could make known a time of danger.
The people often went into the church-yards at night-time and they learned from the letters that were on(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
