    Taking him for a simpleton the police departed. Leitrim was well assisted in his tyranny by his agents. We are told that only for them he would not have been such a tyrant. The accompanied the tyrant in his visits to this district and of course could supply him with all information.
    His Mulroy agent Matthew Stewart met with an untimely fate. Accompanied by his son he took a boat loadening of wrack from Rye Island. He anchored off Mulroy pier where a strong current runs. The boat, being top-heavy, on swinging round capsized. The boy was saved and Stewart though a powerful swimmer was drowned. According to the boy’s story he saw his father held underneath by a big black man.
