countries by themselves. The mother bird goes with the second flock. Some say the swallow is one of the seven sleepers. It builds its nest in an old house, or in chimneys. The latter are called chimney swallows. It cannot sing but it chirps when it flies. It has two little black eyes and a short thick beak. It is a very swift flier. They fly very high when good weather is coming. They light on the roofs of houses in rows and chirp/ early in the morning they dart about looking for food. They eat insects which they catch when they are flying. They also eat hayseed and worms. A swallow never lights on a tree or bush or in a field but always on the roof of a house. If one kills a swallow in a byre the cows are supposed to give blood instead of milk. It’s unlucky to touch a swallow. It is an old proverb “one swallow never made a summer”.
