- There are some harmful weeds such as the thistle and the dock-leaf. They make the land poorer. They spread very quickly if they are not eliminated when young.
Some weeds grow on good land and some on poor. Here are some of the weeds and herbs that grow on good land: St. John's wort, shamrock, clover, bluebell, colt's foot, cowslip, dog-rose, violets, sun spurge, vetch and dock-leaf.
Some of those which grow on poor soil or wet ground are sweet potato, sambo (sorrel), yarrow, yellow iris, bogbean, foxglove, eyebright, arrowhead, bog iris, Our Lady's smock or milkmaid and many others.
There is a juice in the stem and leaves of the bluebell which was used as glue. St. John's wort was supposed to be a guard against witches and enchantments especially if gathered on St. John's Eve. The leaves of the colt's foot were used for a cold on the chest. Wine was made from cowslips. Its flowers were also good for the complexion.
