- In the year 1832 there was a hedge school in Modeligo, Co. Waterford. It was under a black-thorn bush they held it. A teacher by the name of Paddy Denn of Cappoquin taught the children. He used stay at Modeligo as long as he could and lodge in a farmer's house. All Irish was taught and no English. Quills were used as pens. He was paid by the children's parents. They used contribute money.
There was also a hedge school about a quarter of a mile from my home in Camphire in the parish of Cappoquin, Co. Waterford in the year 1869. A teacher by the name of John Murphy taught the children of Lismore. He used lodge in the farmers' houses and was paid by the children's parents. He taught all Irish. Quills were used as pens.
