- Festival Customs
In most villages there are old traditional customs carried out on each individual feast day. the people in Shraugh, my village, carry these old customs out also.
St Martins Day is always held on the eleventh of November. St Martin was a martyr and on that account his blood was spilled. There is an old story told about St Martin that at the hour of his death his dying wish was, that every year on his feast day there would be blood spilled. This wish is carried out every year and before St Martin's day there is blood spilled. Some people spill the blood of the cock in the four corners of the house. I did not hear why this is done, and they eat the cock on St Martin's day.Annie MacDonagh,
