  1. People long ago made great use of the tallow of animals.
    They used to render the tallow in a pot or in a saucepan and make fine candles of it.
    My mother often made candles by pouring the tallow into a mould with a piece of cotton thread in the centre as a wick.
    The tallow is left in the mould for on night to cool.
